A Pachyderm’s Odyssey: Three Elephants Embrace Freedom in Tsavo

In a remarkable journey on December 4, 2018, three youthful female elephants—Malkia, Ndiwa, and Sana Sana—embarked on an awe-inspiring expedition, transitioning from the security of their nursery to the untamed wilderness of Tsavo.

Before their daring departure, meticulous training ensured a smooth transition for these majestic creatures.

Loaded onto a specially designed truck along the picturesque Mombasa highway, the trio, accompanied by dedicated Keepers, enjoyed a comfortable journey.

A mild tranquilizer ensured their tranquility, while lush greens and nourishing milk bottles inside the truck aimed to make their journey enjoyable and stress-free.

Contrary to expectations, Malkia, initially uncertain, boldly took the lead during the loading process, with Ndiwa and Sana Sana following suit.

Thanks to recent road improvements and the vigilance of three Keepers, the convoy experienced a trouble-free journey.

Upon arrival in Tsavo, the trio enthusiastically embraced the unfamiliar surroundings. While Ndiwa indulged in her milk bottle, Sana Sana effortlessly adjusted.

Malkia, momentarily hesitant, soon acclimated under the attentive care of the Keepers.

Devoted Keepers guided the orphans to water troughs, ensuring hydration, and introduced them to new companions like Mundusi, Esampu, and Mteto.

Joyous mud wallows became a favorite pastime as the orphans adjusted to their new home beneath the African sun.

At the 11 o’clock feeding session, their remarkable communication skills surfaced. The herd grazed effortlessly, culminating in Malkia, Ndiwa, and Sana Sana entering their night enclosures.

Despite ex-orphans’ absence during migration, the trio, though still reliant on milk bottles, displayed enthusiasm for this new chapter.

This moment signifies a stride towards a self-sufficient life in Tsavo’s Northern Area—a haven for elephants. Yet, obstacles remain before complete freedom alongside former orphans is attained.
